SaskTel’s CommunityNet initiative included the assessment and build of a state-of-the-art province-wide network to connect over 250 communities in the largely dispersed and rural-based province of Saskatchewan, Canada. The network addressed the requirements of Government, Health, and Education sectors and offered high speed broadband services to both urban and rural areas with populations over 300 people.

CommunityNet was a private IP transport network service designed to interconnect local area networks (LANs) in two or more locations. The CommunityNet initiative leveraged three types of technology to deliver service. Where possible, a fibre optic line or Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) was utilized. If fibre or DSL were not permissible, service was provided through a two-way satellite.
